Silfra Fissure

While many people flock to the Thingvellir National Park off the Ring Road to catch a glimpse of their favourite 'Game of Thrones' filming locations, there is a hidden gem nestled amongst the park that if you don't know about you may walk right past.
The Silfra fissure offers an unparalleled opportunity to swim, snorkel or dive between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. These colossal land masses, which are gradually drafting apart at a rate of approximately 2cm a year offer a glimpse of an otherwise inaccessible geological wonder. The tectonic plates are so close, in fact, that by touching each side of the fissure, you can be in two places, or two continents simultaneously.
We went on a guided snorkelling tour through the company, DIVE.IS and it was truly a memorable experience. From the surface, the fissure looks like nothing more than an unassuming stream, but as soon as you submerge your head beneath the surface you are gifted with some of the clearest, bluest waters your eyes will ever see. The water is actually so pure from glacial purification that they encourage you to drink out of your snorkel!
Undeniably, this experience is not for the faint of heart - you are fully equipped in a winter drysuit to withstand the freezing waters. The only part exposed to the frigid temperatures is the space between your snorkel and mask. Yet, braving the cold is well worth the experience as it is a testament to the extraordinary wonders that await those who dare embrace them! . It's a memory I will not soon forget!
