Old Man of Storr

When visiting Scotland, you must make a trip to the Isle of Skye and, in particular, the Old Man of Storr.
Located 7 miles of the town of Portree, the Old Man is an amazing hike featuring unparalleled views of the surrounding Isle of Skye. As you approach the base of the hike, you will be astonished by the iconic rock formations which were created by a massive landslide in the Trotternish Ridge. Legend has it that the rock behemoth was actually a giant that was transformed into stone after his death. Buried on the mountainside, it is said that only his thumb remains, marked by the iconic rock protruding from the mountainside.
If you want to get up close and personal with the Old Man himself, the hike is approximately 3.8km round-trip or 1.5 hours total. Be warned, however, as the trek is somewhat challenging due to its gradual incline and muddy patches.
When we visited the Storr it was the end of January and we were treated to the sight of snowfall at the mountain top. Experiencing the Old Man during a snowfall definitely added to its beauty and magnificence. I would definitely recommend going off tourist season as we were some of the only tourists visiting that day which added to the enchantment.
The Old Man of Storr is truly a marvel to behold that will leave you with speechless and in complete awe.
