Riding to the top!
There's no better way to catch the Pittsburgh skyline than taking an iconic trip up the Duquesne Incline (funicular) to the top.
Not only is it a scenic and breathtaking panorama of Pittsburgh's many rivers and bridges, but you have a chance to ride in the first passenger funicular built in the United States. Designed by Hungrian-American engineer Samuel Diescher, this funicular dates back to the late 1800s. You can travel up the funicular to Mount Washington station and enjoy a beautiful sunset view of the surrounding city. It's a sight not to be be missed on your next Pittsburgh trip.
There are actually two funiculars in Pittsburgh, the counterpart being the Monongahela Incline, which is the oldest continuously operating incline in the United States. We didn't have time on our itinerary to ride both funiculars, but we will save that one for our next visit.
The Duquesne Incline funicular rises to 400 feet in height at a 30-degree angle and operates Monday through Saturday every 15 minutes until 12:45am. The journey lasts approximately 2 1/2 minutes and even though I am not afraid of heights, I'll admit it was not for the faint of heart.
Stop by the Duquesne Incline and take a trip to the top on the funicular.... if you're so inclined!
