Hellnakirkja

The village of Hellnar in Iceland is a hidden gem in itself in Iceland. Located at the end of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula in western Iceland, this quiet village is perfect for an overnight stay outside the busy tourist hotspots. 

When we visited Iceland in 2015, we went mid-May when the midnight sun was almost in full force. The evening we stayed overnight in Hellnar, I decided to go for a midnight stroll. One of the most memorable landmarks of the village is Hellnar Church. With no one else around, I walked around the Church, peering in the windows and exploring the surrounding view of the ocean. In that moment, I felt incredibly at peace and connected to the Icelandic landscape. It felt like I had the entire village all to myself! 

The Hellnar Church is a perfect stop for brilliant photo ops and quiet contemplation. While you're around the Hellnar area, you can also visit the quiet village of Arnarstapi which is also a quaint gem in Iceland.
