Stuðlagil Canyon in Egilsstadir, Iceland

While Stuðlagil Canyon is increasing in popularity over recent years due to Instagram and Tiktok, it is still a gem that should not be missed on your trip to Iceland.

The reason why this canyon is so popular is that it boasts the most basalt columns in Iceland, rivalling the famous Reynisfjara Beach. The basalt columns are separated by a small river that flows through it with turquoise blue waters. The terrain and trail to the canyon are very rugged and untouched, adding to the overall beauty of the landscape.

The allure of the canyon is also due to the fact that it can be difficult to access. When we travelled there, we ended up going to the wrong area and hiked for 2 hours to no avail, having to re-route ourselves which was quite frustrating. There is almost no signage marking where the trail to the canyon is, so be sure to have it marked on your maps in advance.

The hike to get to the canyon is approximately 4 km each way, so plan accordingly for your hike. There are many areas where you can climb up and down different portions of the canyon for unique vantage points. The climb down the columns to the water is quite treacherous and slippery, so be sure to use extra caution on the wet rocks. A pair of sturdy hiking shoes is definitely recommended. It is well worth the hike, though, as it is one of the most spectacular sights in Iceland.

To know before you go: As the terrain is relatively untouched, there are no washroom facilities on site, so plan accordingly to make a pit stop before embarking on this adventure.
