Svartifoss waterfall in Skaftafell National Park Iceland

Svartifoss, or 'Black Waterfall', is a hidden gem nestled in Skaftafell Nature Park within Vatnajökull National Park. Located in Southeast Iceland just off the Ring Road and only 1.5 hours from the town of Vik. Many tourists drive right past the Park on the way to the popular Jökulsárlón lagoon, but if you have the time, this park and waterfall are not to be missed.

The hike to Svartifoss from the parking lot is approximately 45 minutes and it is a relatively easy walk to the waterfall. The hike itself is beautiful following the trail along rusted landscapes and surrounding mountains. You will also pass three other waterfalls on the trek to Svartifoss - Þjófafoss, Hundafoss and Magnursarfoss. These waterfalls are also magnificent but don't have the same unique characteristics as Svartifoss.

Approaching the waterfall, you will be taken aback by its unique characteristics. Though the waterfall is only 20 metres tall, its surrounding black basalt columns give it an imposing, powerful presence. The geology of Svartifoss has been the inspiration of many architectural designs, including the notable Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavik.

We had an amazing day at Skaftafell exploring the trails and surrounding landscape. Svartifoss is one of the most unique waterfalls I have ever seen and it was well worth the trip!
