iceland's oldest swimming pool on the side of a moutain

While the Seljavallalaug Swimming Pool may not be as hidden and secluded as it was during our initial trip to Iceland in 2015, it is still remains a magnificent hidden gem off the Ring Road - a must-add to your itinerary.

This captivating oasis is nestled in a picturesque valley among mountains and proudly stands as Iceland's oldest geothermal swimming pool, built in 1932. As we embarked on a 15-minute hike from the main parking lot, a sense of peace and tranquility surrounded us as we found ourselves the sole occupants of this remarkable pool.

While the changeroom is quite a bit outdated and not maintained, it contributes to the allure and untouched nature of the landscape. Even in brisk temperatures in May, the pool stays warm as it is powered by geothermal energy.

This location is a must-see on any trip around the Ring Road to bask in the raw nature of the Icelandic landscape.
