Ross Fountain in Edinburgh, Scotland

There stands a spectacular fountain just a stone's throw from Edinburgh Castle and, if you're not paying attention, you could easily miss it.

The Ross Fountain in West Princes Street Gardens is a beautiful turquoise and gold masterpiece dating back to 1872. Though initially considered an eyesore by the residents of Edinburgh, it underwent restorations and now attracts hundreds of tourists who come to admire its uniqueness.  Approaching the fountain is enchanting, with its ornate design of mermaids, cherubs and lion heads - the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle makes it even more whimsical. The surrounding gardens are equally as beautiful and contribute to the tranquil vibe of the park.

The fountain is off the main path and we only happened to stumble upon it due to my friend's passion for fountain-hunting.  I highly recommend adding the Ross Fountain as a stop following your visit to the Edinburgh castle.
