When exploring Killarney National Park, you may completely miss a hidden gem nestled within its beautiful landscape.
Muckross Abbey was originally founded by Cormac McCarthy Mor in the year 1340. Within its ancient walls whispers stories of Irish Monks who once called it home. It remains open year-round and is completely free to visit this enchanting spot.
We wandered around the monastery, revelling at the graceful structure surrounded by a serene graveyard. The magic lies within, however, as one of the most magnificent characteristics of the Abbey is the Yew Tree that thrives within its walls. Legend has it that his tree may be one of the oldest in Ireland, dating back to the 1400s, its roots intertwined with the very essence of the Abbey. The tree holds legends in its branches, one such being that any knife that dare strike it will cause its core to bleed.
There have been numerous reports of the supernatural in the Abbey over time and it's known as one of the most haunted places in Killarney. It is even rumoured that Irish Author Bram Stoker visited the Abbey at night and those encounters inspired his most renowned work, 'Dracula'. While we didn't report any ghostly experiences ourselves, we did enjoy exploring the dark passages and labyrinth hidden within the Abbey walls.
Muckross Abbey is a sight not to be missed, with a rich history built within its timeless structure. Whether you're ghost hunting or sightseeing, it is without doubt you will be entranced by the mystery and beauty of the Abbey.
