Metelkova

On a graffiti and alternative city tour of Slovenia, we discovered a hidden counter-culture gem located in downtown Ljubljana: Metelkova.
Metelkova is an autonomous centre in Slovenia's capital city. Previously, it was a military headquarters that housed the Yugoslav Army. The military barracks still stand to this day and, since 1993, has became a cultural hub and haven to squatters and locals alike.
What drew us to visit Metelkova after completing our tour was the incredible artwork that decorates the environment. The artwork is compelling, unique, and at times spooky. We enjoyed exploring the unique buildings - the only rule is that you cannot take photos of the locals. There was one bar open that we visited and also a nightclub, which we did not go to. While we felt safe at night when we visited, I would exercise caution and not travel solo, especially if you are a woman.
If you're into artwork or counter-culture, you must certainly make a stop to see this hidden gem located just a 15-minute walk from downtown.
