Marie Laveau's tomb

New Orleans is a city bursting with history and culture. One of the most unique experiences you can have is visiting one of the many cemeteries in the city. In order to defy the threat of flooding, all of the tombs have been built above-ground, offering a beautiful and eerie glimpse into the secrets and stories of New Orlean's past residents.

Nestled within St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, is one of the most unique tombs in New Orleans - the tomb of Marie Laveau or 'the Mother of Voodoo'. Shrouded mostly in enigma, Marie Laveau was said to have begun the practice of Voodoo at a young age, a gift passed down by her grandmother and other spiritualists in the area. With her healing prowess, she helped many residents and she was coveted as a prominent spiritual figure in the community.

After her death in 1881, it was rumoured that she was buried in a tomb in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. Due to ongoing vandalism in New Orleans cemeteries, tourists are now prohibited from entering these sacred spaces without a guide. Marie Laveau's tomb is quite the sight to behold, as visitors have bestowed offerings to seek her favor, such as coins or trinkets for good luck.  XXX marks also litter the tomb, a symbol believed to grant the wishes of those who inscribe it.

As you stand before Marie's resting place, you can feel the energy of a woman whose legacy is interwoven in the culture and history of New Orleans itself. It's an opportunity to not just explore the past but also to feel the ever-lingering presence of a priestess who may still be bestowing her magical gifts from the spiritual realm for the fortunate traveller.
