Leake Street Arches
2023-07-12
We stumbled upon the Leake Street Arches while wandering around Portobello Market and trying to catch the train back to our hotel.
Located beneath Waterloo Station, the 8 arches form a captivating blend of art and entertainment. They boast the distinction of being the largest legal graffiti wall in London and one of the most extraordinary graffiti galleries in the world. As we leisurely walked through the tunnel, we witnessed graffiti artists hard at work, adorning the walls with awe-inspiring murals. The vibrant atmosphere was further enhanced by a DJ spinning tracks, adding to the overall energetic vibe.
Feeling intrigued, we decided to stop for lunch at the charming Polish restaurant, Mamushka. The food exceeded our expectations, and the venue itself had an ambiance that left a lasting impression. I excitedly mentioned to my friend, 'I can't wait to take a photo of the iconic Mr. Bean graffiti outside the restaurant.' However, upon leaving the restaurant, we discovered that the mural had already been replaced by a new work of art. Given that it is a working gallery, the art is constantly evolving and changing.
I recommend anyone who asks me for recommendations to visit the Leake Street Arches, as they offer a truly unparalleled experience. If you're an art lover, this remarkable place is an absolute must-visit. Who knows, you might even catch a glimpse of London's elusive Banksy himself.
