Rog Autonomous Factory

The "Rog", or the Rog Autonomous Factory is a hub of artistic creativity in the heart of downtown Ljubljana.
Between 1951 to 1991, the factory was utilized for the construction of bicycles until it was eventually closed down and left to ruin. In 2006, local artists began to occupy the building and coined it, "The Republic of Rog". During its occupation, it was a social centre, hosting many lectures and functions. Volunteers even constructed a large skate park in one of the building's halls. There was even a space for concert venues and performances.
In 2021, there was a massive push to demolish the space. 12 people were arrested as they tried to prevent the city from tearing down the cultural space and community they had built.
The city eventually decided to rebrand the space "The Rog Centre" and aim to transform it into a cultural centre, backed by 1.85 million euros.
When we visited in 2017, it was an impressive community full of art and various graffiti works. We enjoyed admiring all of the artwork and interacting with those living in its quarters. While the fate of the Rog is still unknown, it still is a historical and cultural place of importance in downtown Ljubljana. Whatever happens, I surely hope that it retains the original character and originality that drew me there in the first place.
