Gilbraltar Lightouse on Toronto Islands, Ontario

If you call Toronto home, chances are you've spent a day or two each summer at the Toronto Islands. Yet, amidst the island lies a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.  However, it's easy to overlook a hidden gem nestled in the heart of the island.

The Gibraltor Point Lighthouse was constructed in 1808 and is the oldest lighthouse on the Great Lakes. Originally, there was also a lighthouse keeper's cottage located next to it, however, it has since been demolished. Unfortunately, you cannot enter the lighthouse so you have to admire its beauty from the outside only.

For fans of the paranormal, the lighthouse is also reportedly haunted by its first keeper, John Paul Radelmüller, who was murdered in 1815. I must admit, not knowing the history of the lighthouse when we stumbled upon it, we did get a very creepy vibe as we tried to peer into the lock in the door to look inside.

Haunted or not, the lighthouse is an important part of Toronto's history and warrants a visit on your next trip to the island. To note, the Toronto Islands are only accessible by ferry or water taxi so be sure to check the schedules prior to your adventure!
