Búðakirkja

Iceland is a country of sharp contracts, where rugged lava fields coexist with majestic glaciers and the windy conditions juxtapose the hot, bubbling springs.
The Búðakirkja, or Black Church, is a striking jet black church nestled amidst the natural landscape. Situated along the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, this is a spot we missed on our first trip to Iceland as it is not well marked or advertised. I chanced upon this magnificent church while seeking out lesser-known spots along the Ring Road.
Dating back to 1703, Búðakirkja continues to serve as a functioning church and cemetery. Its solitary presence amidst an isolating backdrop adds to its charm and profound impact. We strolled around the cemetery and church and then enjoyed a snack that we packed in the parking lot while admiring the scenery.
I would recommend arriving earlier or later in the day as we did have a tour bus that came through which made photographing the church more difficult.
Visiting the Budir church is an amazing experience where you can immerse yourself in the captivating contrasts that define the country.
