On our initial trip to Iceland, we visited the renowned waterfall Seljalandsfoss. Little did we know, a hidden gem lay just a stone's throw away, boasting its own allure that rivals its more famous counterpart.
In a secluded cave, Gljúfrabúi, literally meaning 'dweller of the gorge' awaits keen explorers a mere 10-minute detour off the main path from Seljalandsfoss. The magnificent waterfall stands at an impressive 40 feet tall. You can climb the rocky terrain to get up close and personal with the power of the rushing falls. It's a photo opportunity you won't want to miss!
To reach Gljúfrabúi waterfall, cross the bridge by Seljalandsfoss and follow the path. You will pass a few small waterfalls on the way but continue all the way until where the path veers into the cave. Exercise caution when climbing the wet rocks as they can get slippery and don't forget to pack a raincoat as you will get sprayed!
Location: Hamragarðar (South Iceland right off the Ring Road)
