Dragon Bridge in Ljubljana, Slovenia

You don't have to be Khaleesi from Game of Thrones to be the Mother of Dragons when you are in downtown Ljubljana.

Ljubljana is steeped in mythical folklore of dragons - it was said that Jason, the hero of Greek mythology, once fought and slayed a dragon on the shores of the Ljubljanica. As a symbol of pride and power in the city, dragons were added to the coat of arms in medieval times to represent this defeat. However, as time passed, the dragon became instead a protector figure over the city. Now, the symbol of the dragon represents the courage and power of the city itself.

Sitting atop a stone pillar on Dragon bridge sit four majestic green (copper) dragons, standing on guard to protect the majestic Ljubljanica River. The Dragon bridge remains to this day one of the most iconic landmarks in downtown Ljubljana. We walked by the bridge several times in the course of the two days we stayed in town and each time we took a moment to stand in marvel at the powerful archetype the bridge symbolizes.

If you're interested in dragon-hunting, definitely make a stop downtown Ljubljana. Pop into one of the many charming restaurants on the river while sipping a Union dragon ale.
