Metal boat scraps on black sand beach

Iceland is renowned for its black sand beaches, but on Djúpalónssandur beach there is more than just sand and water.

Located in the Snæfellsnes Penninsula in West Iceland, this beach also contains a lava field with impressive formations. Among the towering lava rocks is the 'Singing Rock' (Söngklettur), which is steeped in folklore and believed to be protected by elves that inhabit the area.

The beach was once an integral part of a fishing village but now serves as a poignant memorial to a tragic accident. Amongst the black sand lies the remains of the British shipwrecked fishing vessel,  'The Epine GY7', which met its watery demise in 1948. Tragically, fourteen souls perished on the ship that day and the beach is now a memorial dedicated to the lives lost.

As you explore the beauty and allure of the beach, it's important to exercise safety as waves and tides in the area are very unpredictable and can be incredibly dangerous. Stay far from oncoming waves and follow any warning signs on the beach.
