Burano

Next to the popular island of Murano, Italy lies the small, colourful island of Burano, which is certainly worth a visit.
Located just 45 minutes from Venice by Vaporetto water boat from Venice, this island will instantly captivate you as soon as step foot onto the cobblestone roads. Burano is picture-perfect, with its incredibly bright-coloured houses and its affinity for lace. With a population of less than 3000 people, Burano is a paradise away from the tourist crowds that funnel through the alleyways of Venice.
We enjoyed exploring the colourful town, strolling through the twists and turns of each alleyway. There are ample photo opportunities, so be sure to pack your camera with you!
Burano is not simply a colourful island but is also renowned for its needle-lace making. At one time, Burano was the most sought after lace in Europe. You can window shop at the many lace stores or even visit the Lace Museum to learn about the lace-making process.
Afterwards, head to the Piazza Galuppi - the main and only square on the island, which offers several restaurants and souvenir shops you can stop in at.
A ticket to get to Burano will cost you less than 8 euros each way but the day trip is more than worth it. We took an afternoon and visited both Murano and Burano and it was an excellent way to explore sights outside of Venice.
